Inspired by the ‘Dinner in the Iguanodon Model’ (1853) dining event, initiated by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins at Crystal Palace. Hawkins invited 21 leading academics and notable persons to sit inside one of his dinosaur sculptures to dine, discuss and learn from each other.
In 2009 & 2010 Foreign Investment elaborately staged the Immaculate Conception dinners within a spatial “belly”, marked by red rubber fridge curtains, creating a red dinosaur like cage for invited guests to engage in debate. The group discussed the ethics and merits of the so-called ‘designer baby’, the trade in body cells and the concept of cloning for the purpose of conception.
For A Modest Show, ‘The Incredible Re-birth Dinner’ returns with a new conversation; based on the narrative of the first human surviving a heart transplant, using a genetically modified pig's heart, in 2022. Foreign Investment brings together 19 people, from different walks of life, including a vet, a member of the clergy, a medical researcher, a designer, a transplant receiver, a vegan, butcher, farmer, gene scientist and a philosopher to to dine together whilst discussing the ethics and merits of being re-born, resurrected or resurged from a pig's heart.
Audiences will be able to listen in, watching the proceedings through the ‘walls’ of the heart.
